Brief:
The terrace was handled by the contractor building the garage so my brief was to give the garden some shape using flowing lines and make it relate to traditional granite terraced house and the old railway line nearby. The planting was to include a small space to grow a few veg. Space for a sculpture and/or sundial was allowed.
Opportunites:
The garden was a good size and well proportioned with lovely old walls. It was quiet, sunny and sheltered – the perfect starting point.
Challenges:
There was a view of a small industrial building.
Result:
Interlocking teardrop shapes edged with pink granite setts created two areas with different moods divided by a substantial planting bed. Fine new turf joined a circular patio near the house. We kept the existing turf in the space furthest from the house – it can be cut a bit less often – for a wilder feel. Planting included Cornus kousa, Phygelius Winchester Fanfare and Heuchera Palace Purple. Herbs will flourish in the sunny raised beds linking the terrace to the lawn.
