Seclusion And Parking in a Modern Front Garden

Brief:
The owners whose children had (nearly) left home wanted to enjoy the sunshine in their front garden without feeling on show, allow parking when the children came back to visit, improve pedestrian access round to the side and generally tidy up and reduce maintenance.

Opportunities:
The brickwork on the new porch fitted in well with the traditional Aberdeen practice of brick-capped walls and the owners had a stash of reclaimed cassies.

Challenges:
The garden sloped up towards the house so the sunny spot was rather exposed.

Result:
The lawn was levelled and reduced in size. A gravel area next to the lawn provided space for a bench.  A small retaining wall built near the house using existing cassies and capped with bricks to match the new porch.  The same bricks are used as a mowing strip – no more lawn edging.  Low level lights show where the edge of the drive is.  Many existing plants were kept and new planting complemented the brickwork.
