Brief:
Give the garden a new lease of life and enhance the barbecue area.
Opportunites:
The old granite and brick walls were great and provided shelter. There were some lovely mature plants.
Challenges:
One garden wall had a dog-leg in it, the back wall was low and overlooked, the hexagonal pergola was to be kept.
Result:
The garden was simplified and the proportions of the two rooms were changed by moving the pergola (which then became the divider) thereby making the sunny barbecue are larger and the more formal garden smaller. A new hexagonal lawn was laid to repeat the shape of the pergola. The lawn had a blue brick mowing strip to pick up window detailing on the house. Trellis on brackets on top of the walls gave privacy and kept up a local tradition. Much of the existing planting was kept including a magnificent Crinodendron hookeri and a charming Prunus Kojo-no-mai.
